Samsung unveils its first Android Go phone, the Galaxy J2 Core

Samsung has unveiled its first Android Go smartphone, the Galaxy J2 Core. The newly launched device has been built with an affordable price in mind. It is available initially in India and Malaysia only, starting today. The Galaxy J2 Core runs on Android Oreo version of Go rather than the upcoming Android 9 Pie edition of Go.

Android Go is the stripped down or light version of the Android Operating System that has been made specifically for the low-end devices. The apps for this OS are also trimmed and developed to run smoothly or without any glitch on mobiles having entry-level specifications.

The Galaxy J2 Core comes with Samsung’s UI on top of Android Go. The specs of this device might not entice you but is enough to handle almost all the tasks of the first time smartphone users. According to Samsung, “The Galaxy J2 Core with Android Go brings improved performance to introductory smartphones by offering long-lasting battery life, spacious storage capacity and lightning-quick processing power and performance.

The J2 Core is powered by Exynos 7570 CPU and uses a Mali-T720 MP1 GPU for graphics related processing. The phone weighs 154 grams and features a 5.0” TFT LCD qHD screen of 540 x 960 resolution, a 2600 mAh battery, LTE connectivity, and has an overall dimension of 143.4 x 72.1 x 8.9mm. The device has only 1 GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. The internal storage can be expanded via the microSD card.

The newly introduced low-end smartphone has an 8 MP primary camera with LED flash and a 5 MP front-facing selfie camera. Both the cameras have an aperture of f/2.2 and also has Beauty Mode for better portraits and selfies.

Surely, the device won’t let its users play Fortnite Battle Royale but might prove a good choice for the first time smartphone users and for those with not so heavy usage. The price of Samsung Galaxy J2 Core hasn’t been announced yet, but it is expected that the device will be priced around 6000 INR (~$85). This price tag looks entirely reasonable as the Samsung’s regular Galaxy J2 sells around 7700 INR (little over $100).
