Facebook owned Instagram has added the ‘green dot’ feature, that will be indicating whether your friends are online for DM or not. You will find the green dot next to your friends’ profile pictures which will be an indication that they are online.
Instagram online status indicator will show up at multiple places including Direct Inbox and the Share menu. Instagram has provided the users with options to turn off the feature completely or the users can also hide their status from others by choosing appropriate settings.
Status indicator will show up only for friends who follow you or for the users who you’ve talked to earlier in Instagram Direct Inbox.
In Direct Inbox, users will be able to see the most recent activity status of their friends like Active 20M ago, Active yesterday, Seen, Typing. Activity status looks a bit similar to WhatsApp last seen feature.
However, this is not a regular online status indicator! As already mentioned above, the users will be having complete control over this option and they can turn it off as soon as they get busy or are not available for chat.
Notifying about the online status feature release, Instagram said, “This update gives you the ability to have more of those realtime conversations while giving you the control to hide your status altogether.”

Indeed online status indicator feature will make it easier for the social giant’s users to connect with their friends easily, but that doesn’t mean that the platform has lost its beauty of peace, as users can easily turn off the feature completely.
