CloudMagic decides to shut down Newton Mail in September

The much loved email client, Newton Mail is shutting down on September 25 and the fans are not liking it at all. Rohit Nadhani, CloudMagic’s Founder and CEO, broke this news on the official blog, “It’s with a heavy heart that I share with you the news that Newton app will be shutting down on September 25th, 2018.”

Newton MailNadhani said, over 40,000 subscribers signed up for the premium app and that they got here because of the love and support from their users and with $0 VC funding. However, with the impending shutdown, Newton has stopped accepting new signups and monthly subscriptions will not be renewed effective immediately.

For the users that have purchased the yearly plan, the company said, “We will also refund the annual subscriptions on a pro-rata basis.” The company is already working with App Store and Play Store authorities to set up partial refunds for users with annual subscriptions. Nadhani said that the company will publish instructions for these users to claim their refunds before September 18.

As the founder & CEO of the company, Rohit Nadhani explained the reason of taking such an extreme decision and cited that the competition from tech giants is simply too much to overcome.

It was a tough business decision. We explored various business models but couldn’t successfully figure out profitability & growth over the long term. It was hard; the market for premium consumer mail apps is not big enough, and it faces stiff competition from high quality free apps from Google, Microsoft, and Apple. We put up a hard and honest fight, but it was not enough to overcome the bundling & platform default advantages enjoyed by the large tech companies.

CloudMagic, however, the company behind Newton will continue its operations and “the incredible team will be focusing on new and innovative projects.”

Newton Mail was originally a free email service which began as CloudMagic in 2013 but later transitioned to a subscription-based premium email app in 2016. Newton provided its services on iOS, Mac, Windows and Android along with some really useful features.
