Optical Fiber based fixed-line broadband is the future, Mukesh Ambani.
At the 41st AGM of Reliance Industries, the company claimed that their much awaited fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband service will be the largest greenfield fixed-line broadband rollout anywhere in the world. With a simultaneous rollout in 1100 cities, Jio GigaFiber is to be launched along with JioPhone 2 on this Independence Day i.e., 15 August.
Reliance Industries is planning to extend the fiber connectivity to homes, MSME and large enterprises in 1100 cities simultaneously. While talking about Jio GigaFiber, Mukesh Ambani said, “Jio is determined to move India to among the top five in fixed-line broadband”.
Currently, India ranks 134th globally for fixed broadband speed.
“While India has pole-vaulted into global leadership in the mobile broadband space, the country lags behind significantly in the fixed line broadband. Poor fixed-line infrastructure has been a key reason for this. We (Jio) want to take India to be among the top five in fixed-line broadband connectivity” – Mukesh Ambani.
Jio GigaFiber Registration
Registrations for the Jio GigaFiber will begin from August 15, 2018 via MyJio app or their website – jio.com. There are no installation charges but users have to submit a refundable security deposit of Rs. 4,500 for the ONT device named as GigaHub Home Gateway.
Under the preview offer, the services have been offered with 100 Mbps high speed internet for 90 days, along with a monthly data plan of 100 GB.
Users will be able to use internet at high upload and download speed that enable them to do a various kind of activities that specifically require high speed internet like UHD video conferencing, various camera application usage and other like UHD online streaming etc.
Under the preview offer, upon the exhaustion of 100 GB monthly data quota the preview users have been offered with a complimentary data top-up of 40 GB via the app and their website.
Jio GigaFiber broadband is to come with a router, set top box for TV, landline phone among other things and will have enabled voice command feature for TV. Also, it will have a TV calling feature.
The stormy launch led to a fall in shares of cable TV operators including Hathaway Cable, DEN Networks, Siti Networks among others.

At the AGM, RIL didn’t reveal the tariff or the Jio GigaFiber plans leaving the enthusiasts in dilemma. But, they did mention that GigaFiber will enhance the home entertainment, provide home surveillance solutions, allow multi-party video conferencing etc.

The stormy launch and fall in shares of the competitors clearly indicates that Jio GigaFiber broadband will add open new revenue streams for RIL and has surely put the rivals on a notice.
